Generative AI in the Wild

This project entails a pilot study testing the viability of exploring naturally-occuring chatbot conversation among youth through a data donation methodology. The project aims to deliver concrete analysis of uses as well as integrate the infrastructure for future studies employing a data donation methodology.

Generative AI in the Wild is a project aiming to develop and pilot test a methodological framework to study actual uses of generative AI (GenAI). Existing knowledge about uses of GenAI are mainly based on self-reported methods (ie interviews and surveys), such as surveys and interviews, whereas our approach is to gather actual chatbot conversations through data donations. We pilot test the methodology on a sample of Danish youth addressing what chatbots are used for, how uses evolve over time, as well as what characterizes the communication between youth and GenAI system. The project includes communication and legal scholars in combination with industry actors developing and evaluating GenAI systems in context of youth and beyond. The results of the pilot study will contribute with insights that can inform the ongoing discussion about youth’s uses of GenAI for education and personal purposes whereas the methodological framework provides the foundation for future projects comparing GenAI uses across domains and national borders.
